This Saturday Churchill Downs will be filled with thousands of spectators for what is often dubbed “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports.”  It is debatable, however, whether the noble steeds racing for the coveted garland of roses or the highly fashionable and anything but subtle hats draw the most attention at the Kentucky Derby. The Derby is a chance for women to express their inner Southern Belle and don a fabulous headpiece.

The wearing of hats is not only a longstanding southern tradition, but is also believed to bring good luck. There are no rules or limits when it comes to Kentucky Derby hat selection. These hats come in all shapes and sizes and are typically adorned with flowers, feathers, bows and ribbons. An opportunity to express individuality and creativity it is highly unlikely to see two of the same hat. Women typically wear sundresses or suits that match but their hats are by far the statement of the outfit.

Boulder Opal

The boulder opal is the second most prized in the opal family next to the black opal. Reigning from Australia this stone is largely unknown to the international public and was discovered in 1870 embedded in ironstone boulders. Often the boulder opals are cut to include some of the ironstone, which many say makes it stronger and more vibrant. This stone has a dark body tone which contrasts the vibrant colors resulting in a complex and gorgeous combination. Due to the thin and delicate nature of the opal, stones are not cut into traditional shapes – a free form cut minimizes the loss of opal, which results in the highest quality stone. That is why you will find that boulder opal jewelry is unique not only in the look of the stone but also the shape. Boulder opals are much less expensive than the black opal due to the fact that black opals can only be mined in a 70km area of Australia, while the boulder opal is found in a 200-300km radius leaving the future of mining the boulder opal much more promising.

Have a wonderful weekend! 

Recently, we had a special request. He had been given his grandmother’s wedding ring after she passed away and wanted to incorporate it into a ring for his girlfriend. He knew that he wanted to make it his own rather than just giving her the ring as it was. A few different ideas were tossed around and this custom ring was born. The cushion cut center stone was picked out and set in yellow gold. Then two of his grandmother’s diamonds were placed on either side so the couple would always have a reminder of her. The couple now has a family heirloom that they can continue to pass down – not to mention something old and something new.

The couple was kind enough to share the photos from their wedding day and the photographer beautifully captured the ring.

We recently stumbled upon these nesting cosmetic bags that are sure to alleviate traveling woes.
